The Barbell Economy®

Dividend Income Portfolio

This portfolio is focused on companies with a long history of annual dividend growth.  Underlying this quantitative process the portfolio covers companies that management feels stand to benefit from the widespread changes unfolding in the economy over the years and decades ahead.

History suggests that dividends can play a pivotal role for the patient, long-term investor once they reach the stage of their planning when steady and potentially increasing annual income is preferred.  The compounding effect of steadily increasing dividend income flow has been shown to have a positive impact on overall capital values and wealth accumulation.

The Barbell Economy®

Growth Portfolio

The Barbell Economy® Growth Portfolio puts less weight on the specific need or demand for current dividend income and focuses on the long-term evolution of growth companies and their opportunities within the waves of change ahead as defined by Demogronomics™.

The two most powerful generations of our time, each record-setting in their own right, are set to drive significant demand for decades to come as they grow into then then through many sectors of the US economy.   The focus on these specific areas of growth has historically created a positive set of results, driven by a disciplined and patient approach, while allowing time for the changes to accrue benefits for the investor.

The Barbell Economy®

Tech Portfolio

The Barbell Economy® Tech Portfolio takes the growth focus to another degree – with a full array of tech-oriented companies serving and building the very disruptive years ahead as companies across the globe completely refashion their business models.   We have spent years helping clients understand that the 2020’s and 2030’s are set to be the “Decades of Disruption.”

Each and every business model will be forced into changes that we cannot yet all comprehend.  The world of technology – in all formats – will bring benefit and opportunity in the years ahead in ways many cannot yet fathom.  Risks are always higher if potential reward is higher as well.  Higher levels of volatility should also be expected in a tech-driven portfolio of companies.  However, long-term investors have learned over time that with patience, volatility is a required element in defining future returns.

To that end, we consistently express to clients this reality we will all need to get comfortable with:  As the Generation Y tide rises through the economic system, every company will remake itself with technology.

The Barbell Economy®

Biotech Portfolio

The Barbell Economy® Biotech Portfolio likely carries the greater risks over the other portfolio configurations.  Baby Boomers created more wealth than any generation in the history of the planet.  Generation Y is very likely to eclipse that record in their lifetimes.

However, for now, as Boomers age and technology advances, breakthroughs in the medical work have become commonplace.  In time, as specific diseases are able to be targeted in ways never witnessed before, life expectancy will continue to expand.  Boomers have the money and desire to see their lives last longer.  The Barbell Economy® is set to continue to drive demand, technology and capital into these rapidly expanding areas of service and need.

DISCLOSURES: The above referenced portfolio summaries are gross of fees as each particular advisor may choose a different fee range for their clientele. As such, any investor using these portfolios must also assume an additional cost will be added and the net results shown will differ.  Please also note that all results are non-compounded results noted in simple annual terms.  This suggests that a compounded effect over time would result in higher returns.  In addition, it is important to recognize that the years 2012 – 2020 results encompass periods when management used the portfolios for in-house clientele as well as offered the portfolios to other advisors for use with their clientele through a sub-advisor consulting offering. Learn more about the Morning Note

The purpose behind our “Morning Note” is different than typical newsletters.

We don’t get lost in Wall Street jargon. Why? After nearly 40 years, we can tell you that “jargon” is what causes most of the mistakes investors make over time.

The Morning Note helps our clients see through the constant fog driven by the media process. That process focuses on things which will – and are often intended – to scare you. If you are not scared, you won’t pay attention to what they say; if you don’t pay attention to what they say, they lose ad revenue. Simply put: it’s a business model – not news.

Instead we focus on what we like to call “bread crumbs” along your pathway to your goals. You are your own “index” – not the S&P 500. Your goals, your interests and you and your families staying on your course. That requires a vastly more productive viewpoint. It requires we stand tall in the storms. It requires we remain patient and disciplined, while focusing on the long-term horizon ahead. The “bread crumbs” are designed to deliver your most valuable outcome – staying on your course. Many battles, setbacks and disasters await. Always have – always will.

The theme of the Morning Note will allow one to always recognize this over-rising fact: When we started in this business, the DOW hovered at 950. It is well above that today. And – most important – every single thing we have been taught to be terrified of – has already unfolded, all while our country built unprecedented wealth. So one has two choices – fear today or be confident of tomorrow. The history of the United States is clear. We overcome, we build, we learn, we expand, we succeed, we lead. Sure, we mess it up at times – but know this: the data is clear that our best years are dead ahead.
